The 5th stage of Tour de Pologne (201,5 km with start and arrival in Zakopane, with 5 1st category climbs and 5 2nd category climbs) was good for the attackers that was willing to take away from Sagan the leader jersey.
Actually, the attacks were performed and in the most important action there were two blue-fucsia cyclists too: Ulissi and Spilak escaped from the group at 40 km to go and with Caruso joined Pydgornyy, who was leading the race. The four men pedalled in the breakaway for 20 km, but then they had to surrender to the recovery of the pack.
Also the final kilometres were suitable for attacks attempts, but none of the ones performed (Scarponi joined two of them) could avoid the sprint solution: Sagan won again (on Matthews and Haussler) and so he’s still the leader of the race.

“As for yesterday stage, today too the race tourned out to be less selective than what was expected – sport director Lerici commented – We tried to make it tougher by the means of the attack of Ulissi and Spilak, but the bunch controlled their breakaway. Scarponi had no chance to try an attack, but he was in the head positions of the group in the final kilometres: we’re willing to realize something important tomorrow, in the toughest stage of the Tour de Pologne”.
