TOM BOONEN, A PROPHET IN HIS OWN COUNTRY: ATTAINS THE TOUR OF FLANDERS

It is pure euphoria for a Belgian fan to see Tom Boonen win the Tour of Flanders. Many exultant scenes for the 31-year-old Omega Quick-Step’s rider have been witnessed among the public after he won his third Tour of Flanders. In his revival season (eight victories since the beginning of the year), the Belgian rider becomes part of the Uci World Tour Classic’s history alongside cycling icons such as Buysse, Leman, Museeuw and the Italian Fiorenzo Magni (who continues to be the only one winning for three consecutive years).

Though morning the Wall of Grammont’s exclusion, the race continues to maintain all of its magic, supplying uncertainty until the very end. Fabian Cancellara tumbles (breaking his collarbone in three places and ending his north classics season) at less than 62 km from the finish line, near the last refreshment point. One of the contenders for the title is out of the game.

Great performance from our fellow Italians. Filippo Pozzato at his best and revived Alessandro Ballan loose they chances of winning at the final sprint. But there wasn’t much to say about the last few meters.

We are left disappointed by our color bearer’s failure to win (a long awaited victory, ever since the great cycle racing palmarès) while we are confident that Tom “Tornado” Boonen is back, and let’s face it, we missed him.
